Built on the industrial front of Barreiro, next to the Tagus Estuary, the Barreiro Thermoelectric Power Station was the first power station to be completely deactivated in Portugal. It has operated on fuel oil since 1978, having been designed based on a commitment to supply steam to other industrial units in the vicinity. Its activity was closed in 2010.
In 2011, Ambigroup was selected by EDP Produção to carry out the dismantling and demolition project of the plant's structures and equipment. Factors such as technical capacity and vast experience accumulated in projects of a similar nature, developed in previous years in the neighboring country - Spain, contributed to the selection process.
The project involved the use of cranes and hydraulic slewing machines with long-reach booms, which made it possible to minimize exposure to risk for workers involved in the operations, as well as carrying out all work with low levels of noise and vibrations.
